2026 SAMA Annual Conference Recap: Five Takeaways for Strategic Account Leaders

Against the backdrop of the Sonoran Desert and the historic Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix, the 2026 SAMA Annual Conference brought together strategic account management leaders from around the world for three days of learning, connection, and inspiration.

Libby Souder, SAMA President and CEO, said it best as she addressed attendees and reflected on the importance of our community in a world of tariffs, multiple stakeholders, and an AI revolution.

“SAM sits right in the middle of all the complexities. This is why our community matters,” she said. “The problems that we are trying to solve are too complex for any single person or any single company. These solutions live in the conversations that we have with one another, in the benchmarks we share, and in the breakout sessions we have — where practitioners will tell you exactly what they’re doing, how they’re solving their company’s biggest problems, while also sharing a toolbox. Because SAM is SAM is SAM — whether it’s pigs, pipelines, or paint. What’s working and what’s not spans all the industries.”

Referencing the conference’s opening keynote, where many attendees acknowledged struggling with something personally and professionally, Libby was resolute.

“We need this community. We’re not alone,” she said. “Share generously and ask questions. Learn from each other. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Ask SAMA. We know where the smart people are.”

Throughout the conference, five themes emerged again and again across sessions and conversations:

1. SAM must prove business impact with data

A recurring message was that strategic account management can no longer rely on anecdotes or relationship quality alone. Leaders are being asked to quantify value, demonstrate ROI, and tie SAM activities directly to business outcomes.

Takeaway: The future belongs to SAM programs that can clearly connect customer value creation to measurable business results.

2. Customer-centricity is evolving into value co-creation

Many sessions challenged the traditional vendor-customer mindset and emphasized becoming a strategic partner. The common thread is moving beyond selling products and toward helping customers achieve business results.

Takeaway: The strongest SAM organizations are differentiating themselves through value co-creation and strategic partnership, not transactional selling.

3. AI is moving from curiosity to competitive advantage

AI is no longer an emerging trend. This year’s conference reflected a shift from “What is AI?” to “How do we apply it effectively?” A consistent through line was that AI isn’t replacing SAMs — it’s enhancing planning, insight generation, prioritization, and execution, as human judgment, relationships, and critical thinking become even more important.

Takeaway: AI is becoming a core SAM capability, but competitive advantage will come from combining AI-powered insight with uniquely human relationship leadership.

4. Cross-functional alignment as the new growth engine

Many sessions focused on internal alignment rather than customer-facing tactics — once again proving the oft repeated adage in the SAM community that securing internal buy-in is more difficult than external value co-creation and customer alignment.

The message was clear: SAM success increasingly depends on orchestrating internal resources and stakeholders as effectively as external customer relationships.

Takeaway: High-performing SAM programs win by aligning functions, teams, and leaders around a common customer strategy.

5. Leadership and enablement are becoming strategic differentiators

Many sessions centered less on individual account manager skills and more on how organizations build capabilities at scale. This reflects a broader maturation of the discipline. The conversation is shifting from “How do I become a better SAM?” to “How do we build a better SAM organization?”

Takeaway: Sustainable success comes from leadership, governance, talent development, and enablement systems — not individual heroics.
